A Momentous Honour for RWBro. Neil D. Nyholm

On Tuesday, 23 September 2025, more than 80 Freemasons, family members, and guests gathered at the Waverley Masonic Centre to witness a truly historic and heartfelt occasion — the promotion of RWBro. Neil Douglas Nyholm to the distinguished rank of Past Junior Grand Warden.

In the presence of senior leaders of Freemasonry, including the Grand Master, MWBro. Peter Henshall, Deputy Grand Master, RWBro. Myles King OAM, Past Grand Masters, MWBro. Neville Smith and MWBro. Richard Elkington OAM, and Past Deputy Grand Master, RWBro. Garry Runge OAM JP, the ceremony reflected the deep respect in which Neil is held across the Craft and the Scottish Rite.

A Distinguished Career Recognised

The Grand Master spoke with sincerity about Neil’s “long, dedicated, and most distinguished” service across more than four decades, noting the enduring contribution he has made to Freemasonry in Victoria.

“Tonight, in front of your family and friends and the many people who hold you in the highest regard, it is my great honour to promote you to the exalted rank of Right Worshipful Brother Neil Nyholm, Past Junior Grand Warden,” said MWBro. Henshall.

The standing ovation that followed captured the admiration and gratitude of all present.

Service in the Scottish Rite

Neil’s commitment has not been confined to Craft Freemasonry. As Deputy of the Province of Victoria for the Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite, he has worked tirelessly in service of the Order and its members. His leadership, kindness, and steady hand have been an inspiration to all who have worked alongside him.

In a Circular announcing the promotion, Ill. Bro. Terry Webster, Provincial Grand Secretary, noted that this elevation “recognises his dedication, service, and commitment to Freemasonry in Victoria” and called upon all Brethren to join in extending their warm congratulations.

A Celebration with Family and Brethren

The ceremony at Mount Waverley was simple but profoundly meaningful. Neil was joined by members of his family and Brethren from his own Lodge Liberation, with many others in attendance from the wider Masonic community. Out of consideration for Neil’s health, the event was kept brief, yet its impact was immense.

For many present, it was not only a moment to celebrate an outstanding Masonic career but also to express gratitude for a man whose life exemplifies devotion to the principles of Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth.

Strength and Courage

In recent weeks, Neil has shared with honesty the challenges of his health, facing them with characteristic dignity and courage. Despite his illness, he remains steadfast in his duties and continues to serve the Province as long as his strength allows.

His words to Brethren, filled with gratitude for their prayers and support, have only deepened the affection and respect in which he is held.

A Lasting Legacy

The promotion of RWBro. Neil Nyholm PJGW is more than a personal accolade; it is a recognition of a lifetime dedicated to the Craft and to the Scottish Rite. It stands as a testament to his loyalty, his service, and the indelible mark he has made on Freemasonry in Victoria.
